Everything You Need to Know About Celebrating a Nantucket 4th of July

It’s time to start planning your ultimate Nantucket 4th of July. From all-American amusement to sunny days on the shore, you are guaranteed to have your greatest Independence Day yet.

  • Downtown Independence Day Festival

Nantucket holds the trophy for small-town America with its quaint shops, white picket fence-lined cottages, overflowing flower boxes, and nostalgic cobblestone streets. Combine that with red, white, and blue and a warm ocean breeze and it makes for the perfect spot to celebrate the 4th of July.

The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. on the 4th and ends with a grand firework show over the harbor when the sun goes down. Shop the downtown storefronts and grab a bite to eat at some of our favorite restaurants. There is a little something for everyone to enjoy this July.

  • Main Street Water Fight

Grab your Super Soaker and head down to Main Street for the ultimate water fight. Kids and adults alike are welcome to join in on this time-honored tradition. Whether you’re on team Nantucket Fire Department or the Boynton Lane Reserves, you are in for a splashing good time. The water fight starts at noon, and remember: Water balloons are strictly prohibited in order to protect our waters.

Local tip: If you don’t want to get wet, stay far away from Main Street from noon to 2 p.m. on the 4th. Check out our Vacation Guide for ideas of things to do on the other side of town.

  • Nantucket 4th of July Fireworks

Nantucket’s 4th of July firework show begins at 9 p.m. after the sun has set over the Atlantic. Bring your blanket or lawn chair out to Jetties Beach and watch the stunning show illuminate the waters below. Once it’s over, pack up and make the short trip back to your cozy stay at the Periwinkle Inn.

Please note: The fireworks display on Jetties Beach has been cancelled for 2021.
